The story So Far…
Slush Poppy started as an indie-zine with its debut issue published all the way back in 2019. West-Lothian singer-songwriter Peter Johnstone hit the ground running after the dissolution of his first band, Spinelli, and brought together an idiosyncratic little compendium that fit nicely in the palm of the hand. An issue of Slush Poppy contains short meditations from a cast of contributors on films, books, music, human connection and appreciating the small things in life.
During the production of the second issue in 2020, Peter met Glaswegian musician RJ White of the newly formed Abstract Dancers. Over the following years Johnstone and White would form a mutual support network for each other's music. After one particularly ambitious brainstorming session in the wee hours outside Berghain in 2023, their loose artists network finally snowballed into a record label.
In the following years the Slush Poppy team grew and the label would go on to chaperone the release of Peter Johnstone’s first two LPs ‘Heartfelt’ and ‘First It Was Good, (ect)’; The Abstract Dancers swan song ‘The Black Market Of Fashion’; and The UK release of Texan skate-punk outfit Artificial Fun’s ‘RX-1.’
2025 was a consequential year for Slush Poppy: They started their show on SubCity Radio airing a blend of original radio plays and carefully curated playlists; Hosted a series of parties in the southside of Glasgow featuring live performances; And began on their highly successful bi-monthly singles compilations airing the debuts of groups like DREΓKΣ, Rum Doxy, Winch, Halleluwah and many others.
